R. Shawn McBride recently spoke about planning and how it can be fun to reach your goals.
Hey, folks, it’s Shawn with you here today. Talking about the fact that planning doesn’t have to be boring. If you have friends who think that planning is boring, you need to forward this message to them. We need to break out of this mold.
Planning can be fun because planning is all about achieving dreams, and it’s a path to get where we’re going. So, without that, we’re going to go in the same direction. You know when I talk to CEO groups, I challenge them about their 10-year plans and what they’re doing, and sometimes the CEOs of companies don’t have 10-year plans. And you know what happens when you don’t have a plan? You execute a one-year plan and then a one-year plan, and you do that 10 times and you end up in a completely unexpected place.
But, if you have a detailed plan, it’s like having a compass with you. You’ll stay on course much better. You’ll know where you’re headed and what you’re directing. The fun part of planning is watching those things come together. Really thinking about what you want, thinking about how you’re going to be able to do it, building those dreams and then executing and for organizations when we get a bunch of individuals working on their individual plans. But with a team goal, we get so much energy in organizations.
What we talk about in The 3 Laws of Empowerment in High Growth Companies, is we want people executing on their plans and we want people doing great things. The more they are thinking, the more they are executing on a path, the more they’re doing and they will do things that are great for them.
I’m also going to do things that are great for the organization which opens up a world of opportunity for everyone. So, I want people thinking in terms of planning. I want them thinking about the fun side of it, the goal attainment, the mission critical things, and doing more with your life. Really you get one life to live, are you living it the right way are you doing the things you want to do? And, having the right plan is going to enable you to do more things you want to do in life.
So, planning can be fun. It can be getting to the top of that mountain either figuratively or literally. Some people want to climb a mountain and planning is the type of thing that allows you to do that.
