How to Win Friends at the Workplace: 5 Simple Tips

Whether a partner, corporation, or an employee, these principles from How to Win Friends and Influence People by Dale Carnegie can help run a smoother work environment.

#1 Give Honest, Sincere Appreciation. Everyone needs it.  Everyone craves it.  As the old saying goes, “you can catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.”  From my experience, kind words that are sincere, motivates people to do their best.  It makes them feel self-confident and appreciated for the work that they do.  You can see a noticeable change in their countenance.  So many times people are taken for granted, leaving them to feel disrespected with a lack of worth.  Giving honest, sincere appreciation can increase productivity and sales.  A happy employee is a productive one.

#2 Smile. It is amazing what a smile can do.  No one really knows what someone is experiencing in life.  They may be having family problems, lack of sleep or tragedy in their lives.  A smile is something easily attainable and can make a big difference in someone’s day.  Even strangers will smile back at you.  Give it a try!

#3 Remember that a person’s name is to that person the sweetest and most important sound in any language.  It is true! People love to hear their name!  It makes their ears perk up.  It conveys a message to the hearer; you are important and have value.

#4 Be a good listener.  Encourage others to talk about them.  Let’s face it; everyone wants to talk about themselves and their interests.  It’s human nature.  People are polite by making small talk about your interest, but in reality they really want to talk about their own interests.  By asking a few questions and letting them talk, you could learn valuable information.  After all, you already know your own information.  At the same time, you will be demonstrating to them their experiences and interests are important to you.

#5 Try to see things from the other person’s point of view.  So many times, we just want to express our point of view and persuade others to our way of thinking.  If we do start from this angle, others may argue or shut down or resent us.  Try to accept other’s opinions as valuable.  Try to understand why they feel this way.  What makes them tick?  You may find that their point of view has a lot of value to it.

In sum, to have a pleasant work environment, one must show respect and demonstrate that they place value on their co-workers.
