Use a Strategist for an Outsider’s Perspective

What’s the strategy behind a strategist?

People often scoff at the idea of hiring a strategist or consultant to come into their business. What makes the strategist so smart? Well, I’ll tell you something: A lot of times the strategist doesn’t have an innovative, game-changing solution. But a good strategist or consultant has a different perspective. And a different perspective – a different mix of information – can make a huge difference for your business. Sometimes it’s simply about getting an extra idea or two, or learning what someone else is doing and copying it, that sparks inspiration at your business.

That outsider’s perspective is one of the key benefits a strategist provides. A strategist can tell you what’s different about your business and what other businesses are doing. A strategist may offer ideas and point out solutions that you didn’t see because you are caught up in the day-to-day of your business.

You know how you’ve been doing business all along. You know what you want your business to be like. But you might be missing opportunities because you are right there, caught up in the details.

The right strategist takes your business and raises it to a higher level. The right strategist offers ideas and inspiration. Don’t reject a strategist because you’re an expert. Yes, you want a strategist who knows the business well. But a consultant who is truly knowledgeable, who has seen a lot of businesses and who is on your side can point out little details that you may not have seen.

Don’t expect an earth-shattering revelation. Listen carefully, and you may hear something you’ve heard before applied in a way you never considered. This could be a huge benefit.

Don’t be afraid or dismissive. Seek an outside perspective. Get some new ideas. Make things bigger.
