I recently presented The 3 Laws of Empowerment- www.RShawnMcBrideLive.com and I was asked a very interesting question. “Does planning still even make sense in the modern environment? Should we really do plans?” The argument was made that planning may not be necessary, that we may have evolved to an age where things happen so quickly, that things are so dynamic, (particularly for a new business), that there’s no purpose to a plan.
I disagree. I believe that planning is essential for business, regardless of your level of maturity. You need to understand where you are. You need to understand where you’re going. You need to understand what things look like. For multiple owners, the planning forces the owners to talk about the business and what it’s going to be. For the single owner, the planning gives you clarity. It requires you to consider and think through where you are, where you’re going, and how you’re going to get there – to connect those dots we’ve talked about.
I don’t think we’ve reached a time where planning is unnecessary. In fact, I think planning may be even more necessary now than it has been in the past. We need to know where we are. We need to know where we’re going, and we need to know how we’re going to get there. Planning is essential, and key. Make your plans, work through them carefully, and execute on them.
