Good morning, everyone. R. Shawn McBride with you live from Orlando, Florida. If you’re viewing this, drop in the comments where you are. I’d also love to hear what you’re dealing with and how I can help you. Today I want to talk about something very interesting and important to me: It’s being the rock star.

Years ago, I was talking with my friend Jill Young of Traction First, which implements the Entrepreneurial Operating System. (EOS is a great system for business owners to look at for a very simple way to manage and measure business and help it grow.) She asked, “What’s your goal? Is your goal to be a rock star of corporate law?” I looked at her, and I said, “Basically, yeah. That’s it. I want to get this message out to people.”

Of course, things have morphed over time. As I found my message and learned more of who I am and what resonates with my people, it’s more about business planning than just corporate law. But I do! I want to be a rock star of business planning. I want to bring this message to people. I want to be in front of audiences. I want to be in the media. I want people to understand and learn these things. I’ve worked very hard to refine my message, simplify it and make it accessible for business owners. I really want to be that person who’s helping other people. It all came back to that day with Jill, and she said, “Is this what you want? Write it down. Make it your vision.”

I talk a lot about visions, and I believe in visions. I believe in fulfilling our dreams. I believe all of us need to do this. We need to figure out what we want and then keep moving toward it. That conversation plays back in my mind again and again. I think about talking with Jill and wanting to be the rock star of corporate law at the time, and now the rock star of business planning. I think in those terms. How do I build things so that I can be a known authority so that people want to come to me so that I can get this information out? It’s very important.

We’re not doing enough planning in our businesses. We’re not planning for continuity if something happens to us as the owners. We’re not planning for what happens if there’s a dispute among the partners. We’re not planning for some of those upcoming transactions, and we’re not doing enough visioning.

We’re not thinking about 10, 11, 20 years in the future, what our lives and our businesses are going to look like. You have a lot of control when you’re planning 20 years out. When you’re planning two years out, less control. Planning next week, a lot less control. We’re not in control of our lives as much over the next week or two. We have so many deadlines, commitments, other things going on. A year out, fewer of those. Two years out, even fewer. Ten years out – wow! — almost a clean slate. We have nothing that we’re working on now that’s going to keep us busy for 10 years, in most cases. We can work on a long-range vision. I want to get this message out.

I’d love for you to help me. This is where I’m asking for your help. I would love for you to connect me with media outlets that would love this message, that can use it. I want to get the word out to more people. I would love to write articles, do appearances, be on TV, be on radio shows, whatever I can do to get this message out to more people. I would love your assistance. That would be great.

In addition, I would love to know about conferences, audiences, and events that could use this message. I would love to come to them, help them spread the message, get in front of a lot of people. I really want to get this message out there. I want to help other people with their visions and their dreams. I want to help you with your vision and your dream. Let me know what you’re trying to do, what you’re trying to accomplish, where you want to be and how I can help you and the groups that you are part of get there.

If you have any questions, issues, things you want to talk about, feel free to message me. Would love to chat, would love to understand what’s going on in your world and how we can help each other. Shawn McBride signing off from Orlando. Hope to see you soon.
