It’s sage advice, and we hear it so often on airplanes, and people occasionally refer to it in the business world, but we forget about the meaning and importance of this advice. When you’re on an airplane, they’ll instruct you that in the event of an emergency, if you’re traveling with others, to secure your oxygen mask first and then help the others around you. This makes perfect sense. If you’re incapacitated, you can’t help those who need your help. You need to make sure that you have the capacity first and that you’re in sound shape, and then you can assist others.
The same is true in life and business. You need to make sure that you have your foundation. You need to make sure you have your plan and that you’re doing your things. We talk a lot about working with teams and being empowered. It’s the underlying message in The 3 Laws of Empowerment. Your personal empowerment is your ability to help others. You can change lives, as we’ve spoken about in other blogs. But it all starts with you. You need to be in control of your destiny and your situation. When you grab the wheel and make sure that you’re directing your life and your career the way that you want, then you start making the positive impacts on the world that you want to make through your power, through that empowerment.
That advice you hear every time you board an aircraft — to put your oxygen mask on first — is very sage advice. It doesn’t apply only in rare air emergency. It applies in your business. It applies in your planning. It applies in your life. If you use these lessons today, you’ll be able to do more. You’ll be able to help more people. You’ll be able to make a greater impact.
