Fear, Doubt and Self- Limiting Beliefs

On March 13, 2017, R. Shawn McBride explains why we should take action and succeed instead of being overcome by fear, doubt and self-limiting beliefs.

Hey there, everybody. R. Shawn McBride, live with you. I’m gonna talk about fear, doubt and self-limiting beliefs. Something came up the other day with my group for business owners. We were talking about it, and one thing that a lot of very successful business owners say they deal with is fear, doubt and self-limiting beliefs. I think a lot us as we become more and more successful become more familiar with the issue. People want to do something, but somebody tells them, “No, you can’t do that” or they feel like they can’t, but a lot of people have found out that as they do things, they feel more enabled and more empowered.

I talk about empowerment in my signature speech, The Three Laws of Empowerment. We need to get over those fears, doubts and self-limiting beliefs. How do we do it? Well, what’s interesting is I’ve been reading about this, and this has come up a lot in the recent weeks, and some people say you need to take the action first. Then once you take the action, the beliefs will start coming, and the beliefs will reinforce it and then you’ll be able to take more of these actions.

Other people say you need to really work on your beliefs, and then take the actions. The point is they are self-reinforcing. As you’re taking action, you’re seeing what’s happening, and that will inform your beliefs of what is possible. If you believe something is possible, then obviously you’re able to take the action you need to take. So I can’t tell you where in that wheel things start first, whether you need to have the action first or the belief first. I think it varies for people, but the point is start trying things, start testing things and start wondering why you’re believing what you’re believing.

Why do you believe you can’t do something? For many people, the only reason they believe they can’t do something is somebody told them that. It’s not because they’ve seen it empirically. It’s not because it’s happened. It’s because other people have told them it’s not possible. So don’t jump out there and just do something because, you know, somebody says do it. Don’t just not do something because somebody says do it. Think about why. Think about what’s possible, and empower yourself and your beliefs, and then do things.

You’re gonna be a lot more successful this way, and you’re gonna do a lot more. So start taking action, watch what’s happening, know what’s possible. Don’t just not do something because of fear or doubt. Do what makes logical sense for you and your business at the given time, so you’re constantly wanting to look at what makes sense.

So that’s it. Fear, doubt, self-limiting beliefs. They’re out there. We all have them. We need to erase them away, look at the empirical evidence of what we’re doing and move forward.
