Do You Need to Inspire Your Team? Can You Create More Engagement?

Hey, folks, it’s Shawn here with you. I’m going to be talking today about “Do you need to inspire your team?” This is almost not a question, right? We do need to inspire our teams, we need our teams to do more. The real question is how, what do we do? How do we get them engaged?
A tactic I use is all about empowerment. I talk about people being individuals, and as I’m building my team, and my organization, I’ve learned from so many other people what works well. We use jobs that are tailored to the person, and as we grow, we move people into positions that are more and more focused on their skills and their efforts and abilities, and we bring new people in to fill the holes. It’s all about empowerment, and it starts by knowing what your employees want to do with their lives and their futures.
When I talk to people about The 3 Laws of Empowerment for High-Growth Companies, one of the keys is that each employee needs to be executing on their plan for their lives and their dreams. When you have this happening across the board within your organization, you have an organization that can do more, that can grow, that can be inspired. Each employee needs to be taking ownership though. Gallup has told us that engagement is very, very low. We know that only about 30 percent of US employees, which is the highest in the world, by the way, only about 30 percent of US employees feel engaged. So we need to get our employees engaged, there’s no doubt about it.
If we want to have great organizations, we need people that are inspired to do more, and this starts with small organizations up to big organizations. My belief is, the best way to do this is to get people engaged for themselves, show their self-interests, show why their alignment between what they’re doing, and what the company is doing is going to cause great things to happen. That’s why we deliver the message of The 3 Laws of Empowerment for High-Growth Companies.
When I give this speech to people, we get great reviews, people love it because they feel like they’re in control, they know, they’re inspired to go back and think about their life plan, do the things they want to do. Little scary for the employer though because some employees may find their life plan includes a move away from that employer. I tell the employers don’t be scared because if you lose a few employees who are not aligning with you, they were going to be expensive employees and nobody was going to be happy anyway. So we want to really build that the right way.
So how do we do this? We get our teams aligned, we send this message out there that it’s okay to know your plans and know your future, and do the things that you want to do, because that causes alignment across the organization, and we can do more.
