Any Positive Keep in Communication

R. Shawn McBride recently spoke about keeping communication open with people who give positive feedback.

Hey folks, Shawn here with you. I want to talk about a simple principle. I saw a video online, and I can’t find the speaker’s name, but if you know who this is, please send me their name. I would love to give him attribution. But there was a speaker who was saying, “If you get one “positive feedback from somebody to keep following up.” And I thought this was a radical concept, and it took me a while to think through it. But I started trying it. And you know what I found? I found people appreciate the follow-up.

Sometimes we have a positive interaction with somebody and then they go cold. We don’t hear from them. We email them about a lead they have for us, or some issue they might need help with, and they just disappear for a while. You know what, and a lot of times it’s just they’re busy in their life and it’s nothing personal, it’s not you being a pest. And so many people think, “Well, I don’t want “to pester people, I don’t want to bother people.” But a lot of people appreciate the follow-up. And now that I’ve been doing this more, I think about it from my side. And there are people that I would love to do business with that I do intend to have a relationship with, that I do want to build with, but they’re pressing on something that’s not as important for me at that moment, so I have to adjust my priorities. So, think about it a little bit. You may be helping somebody by following up.

So if you’ve got positive feedback from them, if they were very happy to meet you, they saw opportunities, keep pushing forward, keep building from it, and keep in touch. As I’ve been doing this, I get surprising results. Sometimes I’ll email somebody multiple times, and they’ll reply back, “Oh, I’ve been thinking about you. I’ve been meaning to reach out. I’m so glad you’ve contacted me now.” All of these things are possible and probable if you keep in touch. So, one positive interaction, if the person expresses an interest in keeping a relationship with you and working with you, keep moving forward until you hear otherwise. You’re not being a pest, you’re helping that person.
