Strategic Planning:  How Do Planning and Action Interplay?

I see two big lines in business that divide the successful and the unsuccessful:

  1. The action vs. certainty line; and
  2. The planning vs. no planning line.

When you get both action and planning going at the same time – amazing things happen.

We built this into a diagram to make it easier to understand.

And here is the McBride For Business Planning and Action Matrix that shows what we see:

You can see the importance of both action and planning. Many individuals – even many companies – are good at one without the other. And you can have OK results by being really good at only one dimension.

Great results come from being able to both plan and take action.

Depending on how you look at this inability for most people to be great in both dimensions can be a great thing or a terrible thing.

The Downside

The downside of this is that is hard to get teams and individuals that are both action takers and planners. They are just rare.

For the world as a whole this is a huge loss – so much untapped potential.

But there is opportunity!

The Upside

The good news is that with the right coaching and training teams and individuals can become both action takers and planners.

Usually we find it’s like our muscles in that some are used regularly and some aren’t. Those we use get stronger. Those we don’t use don’t get stronger.

But through intentional effort we can make a change over time.

I’ve watched it happen again and again. A planner can build action taking stills or an action taker can learn to plan. In fact there is no reason that someone that is weak in both dimensions couldn’t build them over time.

But How?

This is all about habit change. Habit change can be hard, but it can be done. You’ll see the basics of how to redo habits in the excellent book The Power of Habit.
