Stop and Dream.
It sounds so simple.
But we don’t think many people stop and do it.
In fact, until we did enough workshops (me and Shannon J. Gregg, my partner for all things Time Magicment(™)), I was often shocked how few CEOs of private companies had 10 and 15 year visions – for themselves or their companies.
Our experience with our clients and audiences is CEOs don’t plan long-term – even if that should be their core role.
Here are the folks that should be the strategic long-term thinkers for themselves and those counting on them – and they are not doing strategic long-term thinking.
What’s the cost of not planning?
The old saying is “when you fail to plan you plan to fail.”
I don’t know if that is quite true. But it does drive home the point – no planning often means failure.
In the real world.
I see a lot of those that don’t plan as actually being “successful.” At least “successful” by the metrics of others.
Quite simply these folks often get what other people want -the big house or fancy car.
But often it is at a cost they don’t want to pay.
There are the same folks that often come to my office and complain about how their “successful” business is stealing the life from them.
And that while everyone else thinks they have made it they feel like they are in jail or on a never ending treadmill.
Making the change.
So how do we change all this.
Well, it’s really quite simple: dream.
The simple process of dreaming – of thinking about what your future should look like – will open a world of possibilities.
We encourage our clients to think 10 or 15 years into the future about what they want in life.
And the long-range thinking is key. You have a lot of control over the direction of your life over long periods of time. In the short term you are often already committed. 99.9% of us know where we will wake up tomorrow and still be driving the same car we own today tomorrow.
But over 10 or 15 years – well, it can all change. You might not even be in the same city, state or climate.
Another great thing about a 10 or 15 year plan is that it becomes your test for the future.
Every single action or opportunity can be tested against the 15 year plan. Does it help? Does it hurt your direction.
The direction is key
Great time management really starts with the direction. Later it becomes about tactics and tips.
I mean what’s the point of speeding up what you are doing if you are headed the wrong direction?
I mean it sounds crazy even writing it — but that seems to be what most people do.
